We had the absolute pleasure of visiting the Betsy Shabazz Center on the south side of Chicago during their Career Day. The young ladies were so energetic and had high goals for themselves. We were so inspired by their ambition at such a young age and their dedication to their school work. We had the opportunity to share our journeys through high school, undergrad, graduate school and becoming pharmacists. We spoke about many different environments that pharmacists contributes their knowledge and how much dedication and responsibility plays a role in any profession. Several girls were already interested in healthcare fields and others started to consider the option after our conversation. We truly believe that representation matters and being able to provide them with a visual of what they can be, was the highlight of our day.
We were very impressed by the questions that they asked about college, picking the correct path. It reminded us of a time that a teacher said “ If you don’t have questions, you do not understand the material.” It took a moment for us to process the statement but now it clearly makes sense.
When you understand a concept, you will know the questions to ask for a further understanding. When you don’t understand, you don’t know where to start and you often become quiet. With this concept in mind, we decided to turn the table around on each of the young ladies and ask them specifically if they knew what it took to get to where they wanted to be. Most of the young ladies knew and some of them didn’t. That’s exactly what we were hoping for.
Not knowing exactly what to do is OK! It is not OK to never ask questions and seek mentor ship. The both of us shared our stories of failures, being afraid of not knowing things and how seeking mentors paved the way to our success. They all have an advantage of being apart of this amazing group with talented individuals guiding them along their way at the Betsy Shabazz Center. #DreamBig
A very special thank you to Dr. Allison Rose for inviting us to speak to these incredibly ambitious young ladies. She is a true gem and we are so very blessed to have her by our side.
