STEM Is All Around Us!

The Health Science Labs are evidence-based, interactive workshops designed to increase interest in healthier lifestyle habits and higher education in STEM / healthcare-related fields. Students will also engage in social-emotional learning and creative writing activities for reflection after each lab.

In the Health Science Labs, we offer labs that encourage healthier lifestyles that lead to healthier futures. The goal is to decrease generational health disparities and decrease the higher education gap in minority and under-resourced communities. With lifestyle diseases on the rise and minority men and women accounting for less than 5% of doctorate-level health professions, it is imperative to encourage students early on to be mindful of their personal and family health as well as provide exposure to career paths such as STEM and healthcare-related fields where minorities are underrepresented.

Sometimes You Have To See It To Be It!

The Tasty Creations Nutrition Labs

The Health Science Labs: Tasty Creations Nutrition Lab encourages youth to strive to live healthier lifestyles by making healthier food selections that reduce the amount of sugar intake. By incorporating interactive themed workshops that address reducing sugar intake and more nutritious snack alternatives, students have the potential to decrease their risk of developing type 2 diabetes, obesity, and heart disease in the future with the help of easy recipes that can be recreated and shared at home.

Participants will feel every bit in control of their health as they are dressed the part in an apron and equipped with ingredients and recipes as they taste test their very own Tasty Creations! This program is designed to create simple, cost-conscious, healthy meals, snacks, and refreshing drinks with less sugar. Students will also learn about food labels, portion sizes, and the benefits of fruits and vegetables.

The Compounded Creations Labs

The Compounded Creations Labs strive to show students how Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) is all around us. The labs encourage students to think about STEM and healthcare-related careers by providing hands-on science projects that promote physical and mental self-care.

Participants will see themselves dressed in the part, wearing white coats and other lab gear while navigating through their activities. This program stimulates students’ interests in math, science, creativity, critical thinking, entrepreneurship, teamwork, and self-confidence skills. In the lab, students participate in various exciting, real-life scenarios while compounding their own self-care products.

Whether the students are whipping up healthy recipes, compounding their own self-care products, or learning about medication safety, the end result will be an experience to remember.

Students will also engage in social-emotional learning and creative writing activities through journaling about their findings at the conclusion of each lab with a published author and creative writer.

Let’s get to work in the lab!
